School & Community Critical Incident Support

Critical Incident Stress Management

I recognize that this may be a difficult and unsettling time for you and/or your community, and I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to reach out for support during this period.

What is CISM?

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)is a comprehensive, integrative, multicomponent crisis intervention system. It consists of multiple crisis intervention components, which functionally span the entire temporal spectrum of a crisis. CISM interventions range from the pre-crisis phase through the acute crisis phase, and into the post-crisis phase. CISM is also considered comprehensive in that it consists of interventions which may be applied to individuals, small functional groups, large groups, families, organizations, and even communities.

A CISM-informed debriefing session is designed to support individuals following a distressing or traumatic event. It is not therapy, but rather a form of early psychosocial support focused on emotional stabilization, psychoeducation, identification of individuals who may need additional support, and early intervention.

School & Community Critical Incident Support

I provide immediate and short-term psychosocial support services for schools and community organizations following critical incidents or distressing events. My goal is to help restore safety, emotional stability, and connection within the community, while identifying individuals who may benefit from additional support.

These services are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and grounded in evidence-based crisis intervention frameworks, including CISM

Purpose of Support Services

Following a critical incident, it is common for students, staff, and caregivers to experience reactions such as fear, anxiety, confusion, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty concentrating.

My services aim to:

  • Provide immediate emotional support and stabilization

  • Normalize common trauma and stress responses

  • Offer a safe, structured space for emotional processing

  • Identify individuals who may require ongoing or specialized support

  • Strengthen coping strategies and resilience

  • Support the restoration of safety, routine, and connection within the community

1. Incident Debriefing

I offer structured, time-limited group sessions grounded in CISM principles. These sessions are not therapy, but early psychosocial support designed to promote stabilization and adaptive coping.

This session may include:

  • Psychoeducation on common stress and trauma responses

  • Guided emotional processing in a safe and contained environment

  • Normalization of reactions following a distressing event

  • Grounding and coping strategies

  • Identification of individuals who may benefit from follow-up support

2. Drop-In Counselling & Support Groups

Following initial stabilization, I offer short-term drop-in counselling and support groups for students, caregivers, and/or staff. These sessions provide ongoing space for emotional processing as reactions may continue to emerge in the days and weeks following an incident.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Parenting support following school-related stress

  • Managing child or adolescent anxiety and school refusal

  • Processing grief, fear, or anger related to the incident

  • Rebuilding trust, safety, and routine

  • Strengthening community connection and mutual support
